Frequently Asked Questions

Q?I AM CURRENTLY IN DC, CAN I HAVE A TOUR OF YOUR PROPERTIES?
A.

All tours MUST be guided by a WIHN Intern Housing Coordinator, NO EXCEPTIONS.  We may be able to give tours of the luxury property itself on short notice.    Please email info@thewihn.com or use our contact form for more information on scheduling a tour.

If you would like to simply drive by a residence, understand that we take the safety and privacy of our residents seriously.  No addresses will be given without prior application and verification of your purpose in DC (via contact with your internship/work study/educational facility/other references).  Any non-resident or person not under the authority of WIHN staff or maintenance attempting to enter a WIHN property or its grounds unsupervised, WILL face criminal prosecution.

Q?IS THERE A TELEVISION IN EACH BEDROOM?
A.

Due to the nature of the shared living environment, experience has taught us that it’s best to only include one flat screen television per property.  These televisions are located in the living room areas of our homes/condominiums.  Personal televisions for properties are prohibited (except for the one person, private bedrooms).  The WIHN makes no guarantee that cable is enabled in an individual’s bedroom and is not responsible for the technical needs of any personal television or electronics.

Q?ARE YOUR PROPERTIES CO-ED?
A.

Although bedrooms are always kept same gender, ninety-five percent of The WIHN historic row homes are co-ed with the genders separated according to floor.  The luxury apartments however, are all same gender units.

Q?HOW SAFE IS THE NEIGHBORHOOD IN WHICH YOUR PROPERTIES ARE LOCATED?
A.

Our properties are all in close proximity to the U.S. Capitol complex and metro train stations.  As a result, in addition to D.C. Metropolitan Police, the Eastern Market and Capitol Hill-North areas are regularly patrolled by the U.S. Capitol Police, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police and Metro Transit Police.  That being said, Washington, DC is a large metropolitan area where one should always be aware of their surroundings and exercise caution when traveling alone at night.

Q?WHAT IS THE CLOSET OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS FOR GUESTS?
A.

The closest, centralized hotel to all WIHN property locations is the Courtyard Marriott DC/US Capitol.

Q?WHAT WILL I NEED TO BRING?
A.

Our accommodations are fully furnished.  We provide everything right down to the pots and pans in the kitchen and the utensils in the drawers.  However, in addition to your personal belongings, there are a few items you will still need to bring with you:

  • Bed linens.  You will need sheets, blankets, and pillow(s) for a standard twin size bed.
  • Bath towels and toiletries.
  • Laptop. All units offer high speed wireless internet.  We do NOT provide desks for personal use.
  • Iron. Given the misuse of irons, we consider this to be a personal item and ask tenants to provide their own.
  • Additional comforts.  We do our best to provide tenants with the necessities of comfortable living as shown on our WIHN Standard Items List.  We ask each tenant to be responsible for any items not specifically indicated.
Q?WHAT IF I ARRIVE AFTER CHECK-IN HOURS?
A.

If you arrive outside of our posted check-in hours, you will be required to make other arrangements until 9 a.m. the next morning.  Due to The WIHN’s flexible check-in/check-out dates tenants may have arrived before you or are awaiting their departure from a session that may be ending.  Out of respect to the current tenants of a unit/property, check-ins will NOT be permitted after 7:00 pm or before 9:00 am.

Q?WHAT ARE THE CHECK-IN HOURS?
A.

Notification MUST be sent to info@thewihn.com as to your arrival date and selected check-in time.  Plan to arrive at these scheduled times to meet your WIHN Intern Coordinator, sign paperwork, make payment, and receive keys:

  • Check-in hours for the Luxury Condominiums are:  7 days a week between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm (EST)
  • Check-in hours for the Historic Row Homes are:  7 days a week between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm (EST)
Q?DO YOU OFFER A SHUTTLE FROM THE AIRPORT?
A.

Unfortunately we do not offer a shuttle service at this time.  Until you become accustomed to traversing DC’s public transit system, we suggest hailing a taxi cab or signing up for Uber car service to transport you to the property location.  Uber’s phone app will allow you to create an account with a linked credit card.  At a touch of a button, you can order car service, no cash necessary.  The following are a few other links to local taxi services.  Visit dc.taxiwiz.com to estimate travel fares.

Q?WHAT IS THE CLOSET AIRPORT LOCATION?
A.

Washington, DC is served by three different airports, Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCI), Dulles (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI).  However, Ronald Reagan National Airport is the closest, most convenient service location.

Q?WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL MY RESERVATIONS?
A.

In order to receive a refund of your security deposit, cancellations must be received at least 30 days prior to the posted session start date or your originally requested arrival date, whichever is earlier.

Q?WHY DID I NOT RECEIVE THE AVAILABILITY OR RATE INFORMATION?
A.

All emails have different filtering systems.  Be sure to check your SPAM folder and add us to your approved contacts list to ensure that you receive our communications.  If you are still unable to locate the availability correspondence, please contact us at 202-579-9446 or email info@thewihn.com.

Q?IS THE DEPOSIT REFUNDABLE?
A.

Yes.  The $400 deposit acts as both a damage deposit and as a reservation fee and is not included in the total housing cost.  The deposit is required to secure your placement with The WIHN and is refunded within 45 days of the session end date upon adherence to our space clearance procedure. ALL DEPOSITS ARE RETURNED ELECTRONICALLY  VIA PAYPAL. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Q?WHAT IF I WANT TO CHANGE MY DATES OR OCCUPANCY AFTER I HAVE SUBMITTED MY APPLICATION?
A.

If you need to adjust any information that was submitted with your application, a written request may be submitted to info@thewihn.com.  If the new information should cause an adjustment to your rate, new correspondence will be generated reflecting the change.

Q?HOW SOON WILL I RECEIVE NOTICE OF THE WIHN AVAILABILITY?
A.

We generally like to give a same day (or 24 hour) response to each application.  However, given the abundance of applications we receive on a daily basis, especially during the peak of summer applications, we ask that you give our processors at least 72 hours.

Q?CAN I ADJUST MY SESSION DATES?
A.

Yes.  However, rates are based on the full duration of dates posted on the Rates and Dates page.  The WIHN will adjust dates to accommodate internship/work study time frames, but no proration is permitted for shorter stays.  Upon request to info@thewihn.com, early arrivals and extended stays may be purchased at a weekly rate and are subject to availability.

Q?DOES AN APPLICATION OBLIGATE ME TO SECURE HOUSING WITH THE WIHN?
A.

No.  Applications only serve to relay our current availability according to the indicated preferences; and to quickly begin processing your information should you elect to secure a reservation with The WIHN.  Reservations are made only by submitting the $400 security deposit.

Q?IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE?
A.

No.  Applying online is completely free and without obligation.  Submitting an application with your selected session and occupancy preference will allow you to receive the most current information on availability and rate confirmation.  Within this email is a link to submit the $400 security deposit should you decide WIHN housing best suits your needs.  Please note that placements are reserved on a first come, first served basis according to paid deposits.

Q?DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
A.

If you have secured housing for longer than 8 weeks, you are eligible for the Split Payment Option.  With this, 50% of housing fees are due upon arrival, with the remaining balance due within 30 days.  This option requires a $100 fee. For further arrangements and approval, submit a request to billing@thewihn.com.

Q?WHEN IS PAYMENT DUE?
A.

Payment is due in full on or before arrival and is typically paid with a personal check.  Payment may be made prior to arrival either by requesting a PayPal invoice (3% processing fee will apply) from billing@thewihn.com or by mailing a check made payable to The WIHN, LLC. to P.O. Box 15721, Washington, DC 20003.  We will accept a credit card at the time of check-in (not over the telephone), however a 3% processing fee will be applied as well.  NOTE:  There is no processing fee for cash, personal check, or bank transfer transactions.

Q?HOW ARE THE RATES DETERMINED?
A.

WIHN housing is available for a flat rate per person, per session and is based on length of stay, occupancy preference, and peak season availability.  Session dates may be adjusted to accommodate work study time frames, however we do not prorate for shorter stays.  Should you need housing longer than the duration of the posted session dates, extended stays may be purchased on a per week basis, according to availability.

Q?ARE THERE RULES TO YOUR HOUSING?
A.

Yes.  At check-in, each tenant will be required to read and sign a Tenant Services Agreement which incorporates The WIHN’s Rules and Regulations.  Applicants may review this agreement prior to arrival by requesting a copy from info@thewihn.com.  Our rules are put in place to remind tenants of their shared living environment and to remain respectful and considerate of their room/unit mates at all times.  Although it is not common for us to perform “spot checks”, any violation of WIHN rules brought to our attention will be addressed immediately.

Q?DO YOU ACCEPT APPLICANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 18?
A.

Unfortunately we are unable to accept applicants under the age of 18.

Q?WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DEMOGRAPHIC?
A.

The majority of our residents tend to be undergrad or post graduate students between the ages of 19-25 from across the United States.  However, we also host older interns as well as many international students.

Q?DO YOU PROVIDE SAFES FOR VALUABLES?
A.

No.  Although, it is not common for us to receive a complaint about stolen items, we recommend not bringing valuables or items of high sentimental value, as we do not provide safes.  You may however, purchase or bring a small personal safe of your own.

Q?DO YOUR BEDROOMS HAVE LOCKS?
A.

In our larger 8-10 bedroom row homes, each tenant is provided a set of keys to the residence as well as to his/her own bedroom.  Unfortunately, our smaller 2-3 bedroom luxury apartments, do NOT have locks with key sets.  All bathrooms have interior locks for privacy.

Q?DO YOU OFFER PARKING?
A.

Yes and no.  Though we do not encourage tenant’s to bring personal vehicles, The WIHN can provide private parking at certain properties, based on availability, for an additional fee.  We strongly suggest that anyone bringing a vehicle obtain a temporary DC parking permit.

  • Luxury Condominiums.  A space in the luxury complex’s private, lower level parking garage is available for $200 a month, with a minimum 4 month commitment.  The full $800 must be paid up-front, upon acceptance of assignment.  On-street or metered parking is available around the complex, at no additional fee, but may be difficult to find.
  • Historic Row Homes.  The WIHN is unable to provide private parking at any of our historic row home locations.  However, on-street or metered parking is available around all of our properties, but may be very difficult to find.
Q?DO YOU OFFER MEAL PLANS?
A.

No, we do not offer meal plans.  However, the luxury residence is situated just steps from a new 24 hour Giant supermarket.  This convenience, along with the walking proximity to the Capitol, and our competitive rates, makes The WIHN’s luxury residence the most ideal property for Washington, DC’s intern housing.  Also, all of our units come with completely equipped, full size kitchens (Please see our WIHN Standard Items List).

Q?WILL I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO “KNOW” MY ROOM/UNIT MATES PRIOR TO ARRIVAL?
A.

Yes.  Shortly before your scheduled arrival, each tenant will receive correspondence noting each room/unit mate with a request to friend The WIHN on Facebook.  This is not a requirement; however mutual “friending” will give each individual an opportunity to meet prior to arrival.

Q?DO YOU ACCOMMODATE ROOMMATE REQUESTS?
A.

Yes, when availability permits.  As long as each roommate is of the same gender and each individual makes the same formal written request, we will do our best to place you in either the same room or unit.  Ideally, requests should be made at the time of application, in the “Other Considerations” section of the online form.  However, you may also send correspondence to info@thewihn.com.

Q?WHAT IS YOUR AVAILABILITY?
A.

This is our most often asked phone question. We cannot stress enough that to receive the most accurate, up-to-date availability, it is necessary to submit our free online application. Paid security deposits take precedence and are continuously processed in the order they are received. Each application is then individually reviewed and availability is given according to the indicated housing/occupancy preferences noted on the application. While we truly enjoy speaking with prospective tenants and parents, too often an availability is given over the phone, only to have it booked by the time the application is submitted.
*Applying is free and there is no obligation or commitment with application. Information submitted is for the sole purpose of our WIHN office and is not distributed.

Q?WHY DOES YOUR HOUSING SEEM SO EXPENSIVE?
A.

Washington, DC is considered to have the highest cost of living in the country. Shared living provides one of the most budget friendly housing options available in DC. Considering The WIHN allows short term (3-4 month) lease agreements for fully furnished housing (down to the housewares), with cable, internet, and all utilities included – in quality locations so close to Capitol Hill – The WIHN residents get the most bang for their housing dollar!

Q?DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE OR STUDIO APARTMENTS?
A.

No. All WIHN housing is within a shared living environment, which allows us to keep our rates low. If you would prefer more private accommodations, we would suggest Capitol Hill Stay.

Q?DO YOU PRORATE FOR SHORTER STAYS?
A.

No. Rates are based on the full duration of dates posted on the Rates and Dates page. The WIHN will adjust dates to accommodate internship/work study time frames, but no proration is permitted for stays less than 12 weeks during the Summer Session, and 16 weeks during the Fall and Spring Sessions.

Q?WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO OBTAIN WIHN HOUSING?
A.

The process is very simple:

  • Application. Applying is free and there is no obligation. To quickly process your online application, it is strongly suggested to list more than one housing or occupancy option in order of preference.
  • Processing. We do our best to process applications within 24 hours. However, reservations made by paid security deposits are processed first each day. Each application is then reviewed individually and all requests are heavily considered before issuing availability. Please allow 24-to 72 hours for processing. Should you not receive a response in your inbox, please check your SPAM folder.
  • Availability and Rate. You will receive more detailed property/space information on the first availability in order of your indicated housing/occupancy preferences; and the respective rate. Review this information carefully.
  • Security Deposit. Within this availability email will be a link to submit a $412 ($400 deposit plus 3% processing fee) security deposit. Should you decide that WIHN housing best suits your needs, simply submit payment for the security deposit to reserve your placement. No reservations will be made without a paid security deposit.
  • Confirmation. You will receive confirmation of your reservation along with helpful information as you make arrangements for your stay.
  • Travel Arrangements. Proceed to make your travel arrangements; and notify us as to your selected check-in time. If you arrive outside of the following regularly scheduled check-in hours, you may be required to do a self-check-in. However, we must be notified in advance, so as to make arrangement on your behalf.
    • Luxury Condominiums, 7 days a week at 10:00 am or 2:00 pm
Historic Row Homes, 7 days a week at 12:00 pm
  • Roommate Information. Closer to your arrival date, you will receive a roommate and house/unit mate list as well as additional information specific to your assigned residence, including mailing address.
  • Arrival and Check-In. Your check-in will take place at the property in which you will be residing. Your WIHN Intern Coordinator will guide you through the paperwork (includes Tenant Services Agreement which incorporates The WIHN’s Rules and Regulations), accept payment, conduct a tour, and answer any questions you may have.
Q?WHAT ARE THE SHARED LIVING ARRANGEMENTS?
A.

All WIHN housing consists of a shared living environment.   Each bedroom within a condo unit or house is assigned an occupancy based on the definitions in the next section.  Kitchen, dining, and living areas are shared spaces.

  • Luxury Condominiums.  The luxury units are comprised of varying 2 and 3 bedroom layouts.  Each unit will accommodate 6-7 same gender tenants.  Tenants of a Quad placement will share the attached bath (4 per bath).  Tenants placed in a Triple will share a bath (3 per bath).  Tenants residing in the Single and/or Double within a unit will share a bath (2-3 per bath).  The luxury units do not offer private baths.  Each unit contains a washer and dryer for shared use (free of charge).
  • Historic Row Homes.  The historic row homes consist of larger 4-10 bedroom, 4-10 bath homes and will accommodate 7-17 residents each.  Each home is co-ed with the genders separated according to floor.  Baths are shared with no more than 3 other individuals.  The larger homes contain 2 sets of washer and dryers (free of charge), 2 dishwashers, and 2 industrial sized refrigerators.
Q?HOW MANY BEDS IN EACH BEDROOM?
A.

Occupancy (Single, Double, Triple, Quad) is defined as the number of tenants per bedroom (not unit/house).  Each tenant has their own standard twin size bed.  Rooms with multiple beds may be (un) bunked upon agreed consent of occupying tenants.  For further clarification:

  • SINGLE – One twin size bed (one occupant) in a private bedroom or converted den; with or without a window.
  • DOUBLE – Two twin size beds (two occupants) in a bedroom or converted den; with or without a window.
  • TRIPLE – Three twin size beds (three occupants) in a bedroom.
  • QUAD – Four twin size beds (four occupants) in a bedroom
Q?HOW CLOSE IS THE PROPERTY TO MY INTERNSHIP?
A.

After submitting an application, you will receive correspondence noting our current availability as well as the physical address to the property you have been assigned.  Use the following tools to help determine your commute:

  •  Smart Phone Maps App.  We suggest that you use the “walking distance” feature on any smart phone maps app to determine a pedestrian route.  Be aware, if you intend to reside at the luxury apartments, this app will give directions as if exiting from the front or north side of the complex.  The south exit will allow you to save 3-5 minutes walk time.
  • Trip Planner.  If you will be commuting on DC’s public transit system, visit www.wmata.com.  On the front page of this site is a Trip Planner which will allow you to insert the residence address and location address of your internship/work study.  This will assist you with step-by-step transit directions, and estimated times and fares to your destination.  If using the public transit, we strongly recommend the use of a SmarTrip Card.
